Travel demand management symposium - visions, concepts and experiences

After three previous conferences on travel demand management in the UK, the international TDM symposium 2008 will be held in Vienna, Austria. The title tells us what the conference aims to provide: Visions, Concepts and Experiences of Travel Demand Management. The hot topic of pricing measures will receive due attention.

In urban transport policies, travel demand management (TDM) plays an important part. New technologies aside, all eyes are on TDM as a solution to poor air quality and to bring about cleaner urban transport and decrease congestion.

Measures and implementation

To reduce traffic or at least hamper further traffic growth, targets must be set. This is a priority on most political agendas, whether of the European Commission, with its Civitas-Initiative for Clean and Better Urban Transport, or of national and local governments all over the world. However, both the political decision process and implementation of TDM measures are difficult, especially when car users are presented with the costs of pricing measures.

The fourth international TDM symposium will therefore focus on:

  • experiences with pricing measures
  • contribution of TDM to the reduction of greenhouse gases
  • implementation processes

Conference goal
The goal is to share the latest high quality research results and developments in the different fields of TDM. Thereby the symposium hopes to provide solutions and plenty of ideas for research and implementation work.

Programme
The programme will be a mixture of keynote addresses and presentations of accepted papers followed by discussions in several plenary sessions, two or three parallel workshop sessions for in-depth discussion, and a poster session.

The presentations will be held by specialists in relevant research areas and practical fields, and cover a wide field of research-topics and practical experiences from all continents. There will be a strong focus on discussions. You’ll find a list of presenting authors here.

Workshop topics will be:

  • Implementation, monitoring and acceptance of pricing and access control measures
  • Success and failure of implementation measures
  • Reducing greenhouse gases with TDM-measures
  • Evaluation procedures for and results from TDM measures
  • Marketing and voluntary travel behavioural changes
  • Public transport and substitution of car trips
