Arnhem announces public hydrogen fuelling station

Alderman Rita Weeda of the Dutch city of Arnhem announced March 26 that the first Dutch public hydrogen fuelling station will open in her city on May 1st, 2009. The station will be added to an existing conventional fuel station.

A Subaru Impreza will be converted...

Four parties have committed themselves to operating a vehicle running on hydrogen. Besides the municipality of Arnhem these are a housing corporation, a government agency and a commercial company.

Costs
The total costs add up to approximately 1,2 million Euros. 700,000 Euros will be paid by the participants, while for the remainder government subsidy is being sought. The Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs will make a decision on this request in the near future.

Adapted
The cars that will be running on hydrogen will be three converted Toyota Prius cars, which will have their combustion engine adapted to allow hydrogen to be used as fuel. The fourth car will be a Subaru Impreza, which will be modified by students and staff from the HAN, a university of applied sciences in the region Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Hydrogen production
The hydrogen will be produced locally at the fuel station, from natural gas. While this still produces (local) CO2, the participants state that in the near future the same technique can be used to produce hydrogen from biogas, which is fully CO2-neutral.
