Enschede does Sustainable Mobility

Beginning of November a busload of representatives from the Twente region went on a working visit to the cities of Amsterdam and Haarlem. The reason for the visit are the Enschede plans to invest in clean and silent buses to be deployed on a specific route through the Roombeek area.

To be inspired, the delegation visited the GVB (Amsterdam Municipal Transport Company), where they were briefed on the latest developments within the CUTE project. Also, they got a tour with one of the hydrogen buses. In Haarlem, the delegation was presented the CNG project and, of course, was treated with another city tour, this time with a CNG bus.

In Amsterdam, the delegation learnt that the deployment of hydrogen fueled buses could be an option if Enschede would at some point become a partner in a Europe-wide experiment. In Haarlem, they found 85 CNG buses to be in service, where the transport company was not quite overly positive about the cost-effectiveness of the solution. The visit did bring some clarity on the one hand, but at the same time lead to a lot of additional questions.

Below, you will find links to two movies. The first one shows Enschede Alderman Mr. Jeroen Goudt presenting some conclusions of the visit (< 2 minutes, 4.5MB). The second one gives an impression of the entire visit (10 minutes, 24MB).

Update: at the end of 2006, the Enschede municality announced that as of 1 January 2008, the E-Traction Hybrid bus (5 vehicles) will be put into service.
