"London adds to hybrid bus fleet"

"A range of new single and double-deckers were unveiled yesterday, as 25 new hybrids go into service on the capital's streets this month with 18 rolling out early next year", LowCarbonEconomy.com reports.

"The new vehicles, made by Alexander Dennis, Wrightbus, Volvo, Optare will use a combination of conventional motors and an electrical engine, which London mayor Boris Johnson claims will reduce emissions by 40 per cent.

"London's fleet is the cleanest in the UK, with 27 per cent of the 8,000 buses meeting Euro II standards and are fitted with particulate filters, 66 per cent meet Euro III and have the filters, while seven per cent meet the latest Euro IV standard.

"David Brown, managing director for surface transport at Transport for London, said: "London has led the way in the introduction of hybrid technology in its bus fleet and I’m pleased to see so many manufacturers responding with new hybrid bus designs."
