London looks to boost fuel efficient car use

Transport for London, the public sector body responsible for public transport in London, is proposing to charge cars with the highest CO2 emissions GBP 25 a day to drive in the present central London Congestion Charging Zone. At the same time, alternative fuel cars and those with the lowest emissions would be able to enter central London for free.

The proposals would mean that vehicles such as high powered sports cars and expensive luxury vehicles would pay the maximum £25 to drive in the charging zone. Meanwhile, vehicles emitting 120g CO2 or less would qualify for a 100 percent discount.

The London Mayor, Ken Livingstone said: "By proposing these changes to the congestion charging scheme we are encouraging people to take into account the impact on the environment of their choice of car. “

Trail-blazer
The proposed changes to the London charge will be watched closely by at least ten other UK cities considering their own congestion charges, including Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester and Cambridge. Drivers entering Manchester are expected to pay at least £5 a day from 2012.

London has been a European trail-blazer on the introduction of congestion charging. The scheme has been running successfully for four years – why haven’t any other cities yet taken up the idea?
