Full life cycle analysis for Mercedes' CNG-fuelled B-Class

The previously announced Mercedes CNG B-Class has earned an environmental certificate of German technical inspection authority TÜV. Therewith the car maker claims to give insight into the vehicle's environmental performance throughout its entire life cycle.

Green Car Congress reports: "Mercedes engineers have (...), for the first time, compiled a full lifecycle analysis for the natural-gas vehicle. Assuming a total distance travelled of 150,000 kilometers (...), overall CO2 emissions are some 20% below the figure for the comparable gasoline-engined model. NOx emissions are 11% lower, and CO emissions are down 54%. The greater ecological cost of the manufacturing process for the new B 170 NGT is balanced out after a distance of 17,300 kilometers (...)."

Our take: one very important factor has not been taken into account: the well-to-wheel performance of the fuel. MindsinMotion.net will dive into this matter soon.
