California: E85 don't come easy

The Los Angeles Times reports about Californian efforts to make E85 and other biofuels more widely available. "[C]hange doesn't come easily. Sometimes it takes prodding from a younger generation."

We've already paid some attention to European efforts to increase the share of ethanol and other biofuels in the fuel mix. How does that compare to what's happening in the United States? In California, known for its pro-active sustainability policy (and good PR: Arnies Hummer does not really run on hydrogen!) the debate seems not to be about the sustainability of current ethanol available on the market. As we've seen, this debate is heating up in the EU context (most recent article on that at MindsinMotion.net to be found here).

The linked article mentions large oil companies that seem not to be very eager to offer biofuels ("Out of 9,600 U.S. stations selling Chevron or Texaco fuel, 26 offer biofuels."), the high initial investments for filling station owners, regulatory issues and the fact that people are uninformed about the capability of their vehicles to run on alternative fuels such as E85. We'll pay more attention soon to what's happening in this respect in the States, Europe and other parts of the world, here at MindsinMotion.net.
