Biomass to hydrogen in German Ruhr Area

Earlier, we reported about the deployment of fuel cell midi buses into regular public transport service in the cities of Bottrop and Gladbeck. During the first month that the buses were in operation, filling of the buses’ hydrogen tanks needed to take place at the headquarters of Hydrogenic, the producer of the buses.

As of now, a temporary Air Liquide hydrogen filling station is at the disposal of the bus operator. The hydrogen offered at this station is “produced conventionally,” which probably means it is generated through electrolysis.

Before the 2010 World Hydrogen Conference, which will take place in Essen, Germany, a permanent filling station should be available, offering hydrogen produced at a sewage treatment plant. “Enough hydrogen will be produced to operate up to 30 fuel cell buses,” according to an Air Liquide representative.
