Last year's Shell European Eco-marathon winner in the category Urban Concept drove 848 kilometres on one litre of fuel. This year, a Norwegian team crushed this result by squeezing 1246 (!) kilometres from the equivalent of one litre of petrol.
The winners of the 25th edition of the European Shell Eco-marathon, from the Trondheim (Norway) University of Science and Technology came in well ahead of the runners up,
last year's winners Hydro Cruisers. The latter, from the Netherlands, came in at 804 km/l. Both vehicles were powered by a fuel cell running on hydrogen.
Last year's winners in the prototype category, a team from French Lycée La Joliverie, improved their 2008 result of 3,382 km/l by almost 400 km, to reach a hardly imaginable 3,771 km/l using an internal combustion engine.
