London congestion charging scheme
London’s congestion charge scheme was introduced in 2003 to tackle the city’s traffic congestion problems and improve journey times by encouraging people to use other forms of transport.
There is a daily eight pound's charge for driving on public roads within a designated zone of central London. The charge applies between seven am and six pm, Monday to Friday. The charge is payable in advance or before midnight on the day of travel. If you pay by midnight the next charging day the charge rises to ten pound. Some vehicles, drivers and residents qualify for discounts and exemptions.
Automatic cameras read car registration numbers as they enter, exit or drive within the charging zone on all routes in and out of the zone.
The revenue generated goes towards improving London’s public transport system. The scheme is managed by Transport for London.
