Transportation ecology is the science that deals with the system in which people, traffic and environment are connected. The many interactions and feedbacks can only be studied in an integrative and suprasystemic way, taking into consideration following three areas:

  • the world underlying and causing transportation (people, wishes and obligations that lead to transportation)
  • the actual transportation expression (vehicle, technique, relations)
  • the world that deals with transportation (environment, effects of transportation)

Effects manifest directly and indirectly, on short and long terms, and at local and global levels. This is why the chair has two thematic foci, each with its own time horizon:

  • Short-term and local - Focusing on direct environmental effects of transportation.
  • Long-term and global - Focusing on the foundations of transportation and indirect effects.
