Idea: hydrogen fuelling station cooperative

Hydrogen fuelling infrastructure desperately needs to be built, but neither the oil companies nor the federal government are stepping up to deliver. Blencoe has a plan.

On the Hydrogen Discoveries company blog, Greg Blencoe presents an idea, which "is to

Many hands. Many pockets. Many dimes?

get 1000 people that live reasonably close to each other to agree to buy a hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicle from Ford and then finance a hydrogen fueling station that will be built close to where they live. A figure that is often used for the cost of a hydrogen fueling station is US$ 2 million (EUR 1.43 million). This would translate to US$ 2000,- (EUR 1,430) per person."

What do you think, would this be a viable model? And could it be used in Europe as well?

Hydrogen fuelling station

In my experience friends and neighbours interested in such ideas will be hard te find, let alone willing to invest. Our pockets are just not deep enough and we all have our own lives to live. Setting up such an initiative will cost as much in money as in time and perseverance.
But maybe there are opprtunities in cities with aardgas fillungstations such as Nijmegen. If we could get HyGear and other partners to put up a HyGear Gas to Hydrogen apparatus, we could fill up our vehicles there and then.

Production

I really cannot see why it would be possible to mobilize 1000 individuals to invest money and most probably lose money on it, if governments and companies with all their good will and piles of money cannot get this off the ground. According to the HyWays final report, a few thousand hydrogen vehicles are expected to be deployed in Europe by 2015: that's through serious funding for demonstration projects and R&D and with big industry involved. Although nice food for throught, it seems hardly possible to me to get 1000 vehicles on the road through such a co-operative... JdG

More help

The plan can be even better with help of communities and companies that want to promote clean transport. I think that government is happy to support such private initiative.
