Honda sets landmark

Last week at the Tokyo motor show, Honda brought about a sensation by announcing its plans to introduce the world's first commercial family hydrogen fuel cell car next year.

This family happily tested the Honda power cell...

Honda’s president and chief executive, Takeo Fukui, brushed aside critical questions about the lack of infrastructure. He stated: “When the car was invented, countries weren’t full of petrol stations. When the demand is there it [the hydrogen economy] will happen.”

Price tag
Hardly recovered from the staggering news of a viable fuel cell car within the time space of a year (previous estimations were set at 10 to 20 years), the motoring world got another surprise. Honda revealed the modest retail price tag of around $100,000. This means that the Honda hydrogen car will cost less than many current prestige family saloons.

Inside and out
To be unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show next month, the car is expected to closely follow the design of the FCX concept car. The car will travel an estimated 270 miles at speeds of up to 100mph and will produce only water vapor from its exhaust.

It will initially only be available in America and Japan.
