EU invests 80-100 million
The European Commission is about to set up a joint technology initiative to "speed up development and commercialization of the hydrogen and fuel-cell industry". Approval is expected in November 2007 and the management structure of the consortium, which is to include publicly funded labs and leading private companies, is still under discussion.
The main goal of this initiative will be to facilitate public–private partnerships and get robust hydrogen and fuel-cell technologies to the point of commercial take-off by 2015.
According to John Loughhead, executive director of the UK Energy Research Centre, the EU "hydrogen economy" currently lacks a large body of experts with combined skills from materials research to advanced mechanical and electrical engineering.
