Green vehicle technology is big business
Management consultancy firm McKinsey projects that until 2020 the green vehicle technology industry is worth hundreds of billions of euros.
"Technologies that help improve efficiency and reduce emissions from road vehicles have a market potential of EUR 325 billion (GBP 288 billion). Until 2020, the green vehicle technology market segment is expected to show a 29 per cent annual growth," writes Groenopweg.nl, a Dutch green car blog.
Groenopweg.nl zipped through the report to find out that "the potential of hybrid vehicles is worth EUR 270 billion, with an annual growth of 16 to 24 per cent - depending on the oil price. Development and deployment of more efficient engine technologies, such as turbo engines, adds up to a EUR 30 to 35 billion of market potential."
McKinsey is unsure about electrical vehicles as it "expects such vehicles to only start playing a substantial role a bit further from now. Until 2020 it will make up somewhere between one and nine per cent of the green technology pie, which translates to a value between EUR 20 and 110 billion. The success of electric vehicles on the short term largely depends on the oil price and technical developments."
