UK: New low carbon vehicle programme announced
'The UK government is putting GBP 100 million (EUR 126 million) into a new GBP 200-million public-private investment program to speed up the introduction of new low carbon vehicles onto Britain’s roads', Green Car Congress reports.
Planned are investments into:
- 'Demonstration projects of vehicles with tailpipe emissions of 50g CO2 per kilometre or less and a significant electric-only range.' The project is supposed to be led by commercial stakeholders.
- 'Business-led collaborative research and development to support projects in all areas relevant to the development of enabling system and sub-system technologies to deliver more cost effective and higher performing all-electric and hybrid vehicles for mass market applications.
- A first time mass production of green vans. 'The Department for Transport announced that 10 companies have been shortlisted to bid to provide electric and low carbon vans to some councils and other public sector bodies, such the Royal Mail, as part of a GBP 20 million programme to ensure all road transport emissions are reduced.
