In coping with congestion, ants lead the way
"Motorists can learn a thing or two about dodging traffic jams from the humble ant, claim scientists," Telegraph.co.uk reports.
According to the article, collective intelligence expert Dr Dirk Helbing, of the Technical University of Dresden, says understanding more about ants could help solve one of the banes of modern life - road congestion.
Helbing and his team set up an experiment which resulted in ants diverting each other to another route just before the shortest route became clogged.
Translating this to the daily reality of congested roads, Helbing's plan "is to force cars travelling in one direction to tell oncoming vehicles what traffic conditions they are about to encounter - so they can take evasive action if necessary."
