Europe gears up for Mobility Week
Cities across Europe are gearing up for European Mobility Week, which begins next week. From 16th to 22nd September 2007, over 1,300 cities and towns from Portugal to Lithuania will take part in the week-long celebration of sustainable mobility.
The goal is to encourage citizens to change their travel behaviour, consider alternative modes of transport and make more sustainable transport choices.
This, the sixth year of the event, is organised under the theme ‘Streets for People’. The theme aims to convey the message that reducing road capacity for cars is a sustainable, efficient way to enhance urban transport and encourage healthier lifestyles for all citizens, without reducing individual mobility.
“Technological improvements and new thinking, which we see in many cities, about the use of sustainable transport are parts of the solution and are necessary to reclaim urban spaces and provide a healthy environment for our children, ourselves and our businesses,” said EU Commissioner for the Environment, Stavros Dimas.
Local authorities all over Europe and beyond are organising activities for the week. Many are also implementing permanent measures which will continue to exist after the event is over, such as the 9 km cycle route being officially opened in Rome, the ‘To School by Bike’ initiative being launched in Vilnius, or the large new cycle parking facility being opened in Berlin.
