An initially modest bioethanol project in British Somerset, began to flourish when it joined the European Union's BioEthanol for Sustainable Transport initiative. It took a blow when biofuels became the scapegoat of the world food crisis, but the tide now seems to be turning.
"The oil companies are getting interested," Ian Bright, Somerset BEST project manager says. "Even though they’re not the natural champions of biofuels, they understand the role that biofuels will play in the transport fuel mix of the future and are investing in biofuel production."
